Future Heirlooms

It all started when…

ArtWorks V2 Gallery Artist in Residence Program is an opportunity for professional artist to work with artists ages 16-24. During this 6 week program I met with the cohort twice a week. I share with them my artistic practice and opened them up to new techniques. The artists created artwork based around our theme, “future heirlooms,” discussed the artwork, wrote artists statements, and engaged with professionals development session. This group focused on work that reflects artist as storyteller, considering concepts such as, what is an heirloom(?) and how does our identity and interpersonal relationships manifest in the significance of an object?

This was a special experience where I was able to grow as a creative and a mentor. It was an honor to work with a talented, thoughtful, and dedicated group of upcoming artists. The images below are from our group exhibition at the V2 Gallery and our time together in the studio. Exhibition photos by Phil Armstrong.

V2 Gallery Future Heirlooms Statement(2023-2024):

This body of work reflects the diverse perspectives of the artists represented. Using the concept of Future Heirlooms each artist considered the memories we embed in objects made, found, and gifted. Here the artists present the varying complexities of familial relationships, tradition, and their ability to recontextualize the meanings behind them.

This work showcases a variety of techniques and mediums with an emphasis on collage. Collage allows for experimental flow and represents the pieces and parts that we sew together to recall a memory or feeling. Through this multilayered work the artists share their stories that are rooted in tradition and are transformed as they pass from one generation to next.

The gallery fellows include: Aminata, Gabriel, Gavin, Joelle, Kara, MK, and Tori.
